Andrés Cárdenas is a Ph.D. student at the Institute of Institutional and Innovation Economics at the University of Bremen. His area of research is the Cuban biopharmaceutical industry, which, as he shows, is one of the Third World’s success stories. Using Lazonick’s theory of innovative enterprise framework, his work analyzes the conditions of strategic control, organizational integration, and financial commitment that have underpinned the development of the Cuban biopharma industry. He presented his work in May 2010 at the innovation and inequality workshop on biopharmaceuticals in Pisa, organized by Mariana Mazzucato and Luigi Orsenigo in which Lazonick also participated.
Cárdenasholds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Havana, Cuba where he also worked as a researcher and planner after graduation. He received his M.S. degree in economics from the University of Leipzig.
